For Women’s History Month, we are featuring Betty Roberts (1923–2011). She was the first woman to serve on the Oregon Court of Appeals and the Oregon Supreme Court In 1955 at age thirty-two, she went back to college and graduated in 1958. She went on to receive a Master of Science degree in 1961 followed by a law degree from Northwestern College of Law in Portland in 1965. February is Black History Month and an ideal time to celebrate local, black-owned businesses. One of our local favorites, Epilogue Kitchen and Cocktails in downtown Salem, serves a delicious menu inspired by Black culture. Jonathan Jones, the chef and co-owner, has been a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist for two consecutive years. The owners also recently created a Library of Black Excellence in the restaurant. If customers read five of the books and discuss one with the staff, they get a free meal! Collier Law staff found a treat in the break room this morning: an authentic King Cake Stephanie brought back from New Orleans. King Cakes are a Mardi Gras specialty, only to be eaten between the feast of the Epiphany on January 6, and Mardi Gras Day, and are adorned with purple, green, and gold sprinkles. Collier Law goes to New Orleans! As the Oregon State Bar’s Young Lawyer Delegate for 2023, Stephanie Palmblad attended the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Midyear Meeting in New Orleans this past weekend. Attorneys from across the country convened to caucus and discuss pressing issues and changes affecting the legal field, and vote on critical matters in the House of Delegates on Monday.
